Divine Dogs
Our divine self waits like the dogs
I saw in the park today-
eyes looking up, chins resting on paws,
waiting for us to surrender our distractions.
A lot is said now, including from myself, about the current state of noise and distraction. About the over abundance of information and the lack of embodiment, presence, and simple action. Yet I believe we are where we are because of a long held aspect of human nature that always has us looking for something else, hungry for what something may indicate rather than being with what it actually is
Consider this moving excerpt from Rilke, penned about 100 years ago. “All right, the springtime did need you. And lots of stars Wanted you to watch them. A wave, long-gone now, seemed to lift itself just for you, as did the strains From some violin when you passed an open window. All this was entrusted to you. But how did you handle it? Isn’t it true you were always distracted, expecting something else, as though these things were announcing some lover’s arrival?
Take the emptiness you hold in your arms and scatter it into the open spaces we breathe: maybe the birds will feel how the air is thinner and fly with more affection.“
There is so much waiting for us just around the corner, just in between breaths.
In our attune practice today, our theme was THE DETAILS AS THE DOORWAY TO PRESENCE.
What aliveness is just there in the press of your hand? The angle of light? Can these small details lead us through the threshold of distraction and invite us to have a glimpse of the infinite now that we are always tumbling through?
I hope this gives you something joyful to play with this weekend!
